I threw Brad a small college-buddy get-together for his 33rd birthday. I attempted a larger, full-scale surprise party, but Brad sniffed it out and threats of divorce busy family and friends' schedules made this smaller gathering a little easier. Although I didn't get to see the guys for too long (the kids and I headed over to Madison for the night to stay out of everyone's hair) it was still wonderful to chat with a few of the people who were such a huge part of Brad and I's life during our college years.
The guys arrived around noon and had a quick lunch before heading off to the golf course, and I stood outside the door, listening to their banter pick up right where it had left off. I listened to Brad use his long-forgotten Jim/Joe slang. I heard his voice change over from dutiful dad, loving husband, family provider and my #1 support person to his responsibility-free, basketball-playing, poker-loving self. And I couldn't keep the smile off my face. Thank you so much to Joe, Jim and Erik for that. And next year, divorce-be-damned, we're doing it again!
I managed to take just a couple quick pictures on Sunday when I got back home with the kids. The guys enjoyed golfing, mini-hoop basketball, poker, and fishing, and ended the gathering with a couple games of cornhole.
I just couldn't keep Brendan away from the guys. Maybe next time Eli, Josiah and Ingrid will have to come along and they can have their own party!
