August 2014

Here are some family pictures from August 2014...

A late-night snack-attack after back-to-back-to-back softball games.

We let Brendan go to the games with Brad, even though they didn't get over until 10:30pm.  So, by the time they got home, had snacked, and had showered, Brendan was pretty loopy from being over-tired.  But he was also pretty funny.

Oh, electronics.  I have such a like/dislike relationship with you. :)  Above, I was making lunch and I noticed that things were quiet.  Enjoyable, yes, but I usually pay for it in the end, so I sought out my now-quiet kids and found them all laid out on my bed playing with electronics.  Kinda cute.  And I have to admit that I snuck back to the kitchen and prepared our meal in blessed silence.  This time we both won, electronics!

Two phones at once!

The super-moon.  What a beautiful night!

I took a bag of garbage out, threw it in the can, and turned to go back inside.  Something caught my eye and I turned around....lots of tiny flecks on our garbage can cover.  Hmmmm...  Upon closer inspection, they were all those little black beetles that had been so horrible this summer.  All dead.  There are probably four times as many on the ground around the can, because I had lifted it to throw in the garbage.  I wondered why they were all dead.  And then it hit me.  The farmer behind us had sprayed the afternoon before.  Could that have drifted into our yard that far and killed the bugs?  That potent from that far away?  It's scary that those chemicals are on our food.  And that my kids play outside not too far from the field.  (Although I quarantine them indoors on the days he sprays.  And he's good about making sure the wind isn't blowing our direction.)  Food for thought.

Watch out, Brad...I've found another love in my life.  Swiss chard!  It's so pretty!  And I love the slightly bitter, earthy flavor that comes from sauteing it in a little olive oil and finishing it with some lemon juice and a sprinkling of parmesan cheese.  Delicious!

Some produce from our garden.  I feel like a proud mama!

Megan is all snuggled up and spending some time with the Disney princesses.

Bedtime books!

Emily has now had her first trip to the ER.
At 9pm last night we were in Madison visiting Brad's parents.  We were finishing up having a campfire and I ran inside to put together a sandwich for Brad and Brendan, who had skipped supper in order to go golfing.  I opened up the storm door to lean out and ask them what they wanted on their sandwich and at that same moment Emily, who was climbing the steps to come inside, tripped on the top step and went flying, head-first, into the edge of the door.  She stood up, screaming, and all I saw was blood and bone.  I yelled out, "It's a BAD ONE!" to Brad and cuddled her until we could get a cold rag pressed to it.  The cut wasn't incredibly big (a little less than an inch long), but it was very deep, and right on her face, so we piled her into the van and took her back to Montevideo to the ER for stitches.  Emily was a trooper.  She calmed down and even spend the entire 30-minute ride talking with me, instead of falling asleep, which I didn't want to happen.  At the ER they took us in right away, checked and double-checked our story, and ended up saving us a large ER bill by telling us to steri-strip it instead of going through the trauma and expense of stitches.  So, something we were worked up about being a big deal ended up not being much of one.  Lesson learned.
